about

Blind John O'Gunn is a bluesman from Mali.

I discovered this 19 year old boy when I was on holidays in Mali, back in 2009, He is now 22.

I found him playing guitar, singing and stomping near the Djinguereber Mosque, Timbuktu, and I talked to him for a while.

He learned some english while guiding tourists around the city, and since was given a rugged mp3 player with a John Lee Hooker compilation, he found his inspiration to write and perform his own songs.

You can recognize him by his unique message, written in cardboard: "accepting food, cash or batteries".

So I sat down with him, put my mp3 player in record mode, we jammed through a couple of his songs, and I was completely blown away!

We became close friends, and I offered to help getting his music heard and his talent known, so I became his "manager".

Due to the poor quality of these recording, I decided to put those songs up for free download: "Scarecrow Blues" in 2009 and "Blues Is All That Is Real" in 2010, a presumedly posthumous release.

On February 8th 2010, I heard the news that John was found dead. A friend in Timbuktu told me so, and for 3 years, I believed he was gone for good. To my overwhelming surprise, I got a call recently from Blind John himself! After we met, he decided to "travel around", and so he did, for the last 3 years and a half.

They say that best things come in 3's, and so on September 2013, 3 new songs are now available, 3 years after the last known recording was published. "Laid Out My Seed", "Comin' Home To Mali" and "Baby Got No Love" are as raw as one could expect from a man who's got as much talent as the size of his soul.

This new record is available on CD format, in a limited edition of 20 handcrafted copies (30USD/23EUR + shipping). All sales revenues and donations will be used to buy Blind John O'Gunn some recording equipment. You can order it by email: blindjohnogunn@gmail.com.
